Analysis of the editing in G.I. Joe - Rise of the cobras (2009)

for homework we were asked to analyse the editing in any movie clip. i decided to analyse the editing from the G.I. Joe trailer. at the very start of the clip a wash in is used to set the scene, to show us a different world. the next edit that is used is a fade out after the antagonist says "i want the warheads ready to launch in one hour" this suggests that time (one hour) has past. panning shot is used showing two of the antagonist standing side by side then the short pans behind them in a fast pace showing the back of them in a long shot looking at a giant screen. then shot then wipes out to show the audience a new scene in a different location. After about 4 seconds the shot fades to the protagonists showing us time passing and also to show us that there a different things happening at the same time. after two seconds it fades again to another location with one of the antagonists and then its fades to black for about 3 seconds. Next is a shot of people in the 'real' world just talking with people and doing their everyday stuff showing normality then there's an explosion and the shot fades for another 3 seconds. it then fades in back to where the explosion was and something strange is happening to the building and then it goes to a long shot then cuts to an Ariel view above the building. it cuts again to a mid shot of people running as the building is collapsing the cuts are coming in at a fast pace to show pandemonium and danger. As the building hits the water and water splashes up at the camera the shot fades to black moving to a different location where the protagonists are. that shot then fades after 5 seconds then fades again this shows us that time is moving on really fast. theres a voiceover of the protagonists leader telling us about what he is and they all do and then we are shown a shot of each protagonist one after the other in action each time the shot changes to a different protagonist the shot fades into each one. after the last one is shown it fades for 6 seconds then fade back in to one of the protagonists saying 'I want in.' then it fades again showing us them putting their Armour and uniform on ready to go to war with the antagonists. the shots are still fading showing us time is still moving on. a wash in shot is then used when the action between the protagonists and antagonists begin. then its fades twice when one of the protagonists leap from the top of a building to the antagonists air craft. the shots start to come in quickly and cut away's are used at a fast pace cutting to action to location etc. showing us that the battle between good and evil has begun. then an overcranking (slow motion) edit is used as two of the protagonist jump into a moving train and out the other side then the shots begin to cut away again. then eventually it fades to black for a few seconds and then fades in again to one of the protagonist. then fades back to black and the movie title appears and after about 6 seconds it fades to black. and we hear one of the antagonist say 'This has only just begun.' as she says this the shot fades back in and we see her face then it cuts away and the goes into slow motion as two of the protagonist start dodging very fast moving baby missiles which are coming to wards them.

Thriller trailer - The Others

the trailer for the others has used various different types on conventions to make audiences see that this is a thriller. at the start of the trailer the music that is being played is a soft slow paced sound to make the audience unaware of what is going to happen it slightly relaxes them a bit then it slowly changes giving the audience that feel that somethings not right. this is relates to the thriller convention because it builds up suspense and tension for the audience. the trailer creates a sense of mystery, the dialogue that is is very mysterious its creates enigma codes for the audience for example at 0:40 one of the children say why did you open the window?" and the other replies "it was victor" this raises enigma because we now want to know who victor is. also at 1:00 theres a voice over of an old woman saying "sometimes the world of the dead gets caught up in the world of the living" this almost confuses the audience and makes them question what she means. the story links with normality because its set in a large family home a mother, two children and a nanny and it just seems to start of as another normal day in their life which tends to happen in most thrillers starts of as a normal day and then goes into a disequilibrium. there are a lot of fades and wash outs used in this scene and whip pans as there scene becomes more alive. the whip pans suggest confusion as the mother its trying to find out what is happening and the fades show that time is passing really quickly these go into the thriller genre because in thrillers these styles of editing are often used to create a sort of pandemonium and have audiences on the edge of there seats wondering whats going on. theater of the mind is used a couple times in this clip for example at 0:30 we see the handle of the bedroom door moving up and down as though someone is trying to get in but we never get to see who it was and also at 1:21 we seen the mother look behind her through the mirror at the door and its closing but we don't get to see if anyone was there. theater of the mind works well within the thriller genre because it leave the audience to make up an alternative to what they think happened next which makes the film more exciting for them. no crimes are committed in this trailer we only see spirits getting in to the minds of the living the house belonged to a family before whom had a history there and the spirits are trying to claim back whats theirs by getting to the young childrens heads and slowly twisting them leaving their mother to think that something is wrong with them suggesting that the others is a psychological thriller.

storyboard film

for our task we had to choose a partner and create a six framed storyboard sequence which demonstrated the use of 'Theater of the Mind' after we did so we then had to import or six frames onto the mac PC and edit each frame into a small sequence. i worked with Rayna and our sequence is called 'The Deal'. the first shot is a long shot of two men walking into an office and finding a man dead in his chair with a note in his hand. the next shot is a close up of the dead man's hand with the note in it. we then used a two shot of the two men reading the note. then we have a mid shot of a suitcase on the desk. the next shot is another mid shot of man number 1 opening up the suitcase and our last shot is a two shot of the two men with the suitcase, man number 2 looking frightened and man number 1 with smug grin on his face. we created various theater of the mind moments within this small sequence. The first moment we use theater of the mind is when we see the guy sitting in the chair. we are unable to tell if he is dead or alive so at this point the audience is wondering who he is and whats up with him also what and why the two other men are in there. The second time we used theater of the mind is when the two men are reading the note the audience can't see whats in the note so they don't know whether the note is good or bad. the next time we use theater of the mind is when man number 1 opens the suitcase and then we see man number 1 and 2's facial expressions in the last shot. by looking at the last shot and the way it fades into black could be a suggestion that something bad may be about to happen to man number 2 and that man number 1 had been part of another plan to get rid of him it leaves you thinking about many alternative endings because at the start it seemed as tho they were partners and in on something together and by watching the end it seems as though man number 2 was cut out of the last part of the deal.
our use of theater of the mind was successful, we used it more than once we tried to make the audience have to question each shot i.e whats this? who is he? why is he there? etc. which Rayna and i agreed went quite well we also asked other people what they thought about it and they seemed to enjoy it and also agreed that the theater of the mind was used very well.
if we could improve it i think could have took more time with the drawings, maybe add a few more shots to build up more suspense and use more transitions and a small bit of dialogue.
before doing this task i wasn't able to use iMovie i found it difficult but since finishing this task and a little help i now get the hang of it and find it a lot easier to use, it wasn't as hard as i thought it would be.

Camera shots

For media we were told to take pictures of long shot, mid shot, close - up establishing shot etc so that we are able to show our understanding of the different types of camera shot that there are. during the lesson Nicole Rebbecca Rayna & I went out a took pictures showing each of the shots above these are some of the photos that were taken.

This is an establishing shot this is used to set the scene. in this shot we can see that the scene is about to take place at a school on a bright sunny day.

This is a long shot of Philip strolling we can see this is a long shot because we are able to see Philips whole body along with some of the setting in the background which helps gives the audience an idea of where he is.

Here is a side shot of him as he takes a drink we used this shot to show that he was thirsty that although he was taking a sip of his drink you can see in his facial expression that he is contemplating what hes going to do or where he is going to go next.

this is a mid shot. in this shot you can see Philip looking quite suspicious, hes thought about his next move. mid shots are often used to focus on part of something in particular but at the same time still show the spectators enough to feel as though they are looking at the whole of that specific thing.

this is a low angle shot in this picture you can see that Philip is looking down on us which suggests that he has become more dominant and from his body language and facial expression we can see that he is smirking and the way his arms are positioned show that he is in control.

this is a close up shot of a bag the reason we chose this a close up is because it builds up tension with the audience when they see this it makes them wonder what could be in the bag, is it good or bad etc. we also took this as a close up to show that in our story its plays an important part.

This is an over the shoulder shot in this shot we can see that jordan has been confronted by someone. by his facial experssion we can see that he looks a bit frustrated as though he doesn't like what he is being told. this shot is usually used if we want to see a conversation between two people from their point of views.
