Thriller trailer - The Others

the trailer for the others has used various different types on conventions to make audiences see that this is a thriller. at the start of the trailer the music that is being played is a soft slow paced sound to make the audience unaware of what is going to happen it slightly relaxes them a bit then it slowly changes giving the audience that feel that somethings not right. this is relates to the thriller convention because it builds up suspense and tension for the audience. the trailer creates a sense of mystery, the dialogue that is is very mysterious its creates enigma codes for the audience for example at 0:40 one of the children say why did you open the window?" and the other replies "it was victor" this raises enigma because we now want to know who victor is. also at 1:00 theres a voice over of an old woman saying "sometimes the world of the dead gets caught up in the world of the living" this almost confuses the audience and makes them question what she means. the story links with normality because its set in a large family home a mother, two children and a nanny and it just seems to start of as another normal day in their life which tends to happen in most thrillers starts of as a normal day and then goes into a disequilibrium. there are a lot of fades and wash outs used in this scene and whip pans as there scene becomes more alive. the whip pans suggest confusion as the mother its trying to find out what is happening and the fades show that time is passing really quickly these go into the thriller genre because in thrillers these styles of editing are often used to create a sort of pandemonium and have audiences on the edge of there seats wondering whats going on. theater of the mind is used a couple times in this clip for example at 0:30 we see the handle of the bedroom door moving up and down as though someone is trying to get in but we never get to see who it was and also at 1:21 we seen the mother look behind her through the mirror at the door and its closing but we don't get to see if anyone was there. theater of the mind works well within the thriller genre because it leave the audience to make up an alternative to what they think happened next which makes the film more exciting for them. no crimes are committed in this trailer we only see spirits getting in to the minds of the living the house belonged to a family before whom had a history there and the spirits are trying to claim back whats theirs by getting to the young childrens heads and slowly twisting them leaving their mother to think that something is wrong with them suggesting that the others is a psychological thriller.
