How is ethnicity represented?

In this film, bend it like Beckham, one of the ways ethnicity is represented is through the use of mise en scene. the main props used to define ethnicity are the big picture on the families living room wall of their Hindu god which suggests to us that religion is an important part of their lives. the clothes that they wear are sari's which show that they are strict Hindu's but however the main character Jess and her sister choose their own attire. Jess is a tomboy and wears tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts her sister is a girly girl and wears tight fitted sometimes revealing clothing. which shows they are slightly rebellious towards their religion. the props used in Jess' which show ethnicity are the Dahl which she is helping her mum cook this shows the audience about indian culture as its a tradition for daughters to help their mothers cook and clean. jules is white british and football is a part of their. jules and her family have a big football net in their back yard which suggests to us that football is quite important. also the scene scene where Jules dad is demonstrating to her mum the rules of football using various items of food. jules' mum dresses very stylish like a football wag where as jules is also a tomboy who wears tracksuit bottoms crop tops and t-shirts. the other characters in the story are indian but there the total opposite to the strict religious Indians. they wear very revealing clothes they have more of a slutty attitude, not very intelligent and rebellious.

The editing is used to represent ethnicity of jess to show her dominance when she is playing football with her friends the shots cut really quick and cuts away between her and David Beckham to compare and show how quick and skilled she is. the speed of the transitions between every scene are very fast which show time passing by. the shots on jules are cut much shorter to show that she is important but not as important as jess which is different because usually white characters are portrayed to be more dominant either as a protagonist or antagonist. there are a few shots of Jess and Jules' Coach Joe but when then the camera is on him the it stays on him for a good few seconds to show audience that he has some sort of romantic connection with Jess which is normally forbidden in indian culture for them to marry anyone outside of their culture. There are a lot of cross fades used to show time still going by and within these shots many different things are happening such as indian wedding, fighting, blossoming relationship and also the outcome of the whole story.

The sound used to represent ethnicity is mostly sound track. the soundtrack is very upbeat and fast paced to show a contrast within the cultural family and football. the dialogue of jess' mum and dad represent ethnicity because they have a very strong indian accent whereas Jess' and her sister's accent are english. the sound effects which are used are a chime bell whenever Jess drops a bombshell on her mum for example: when she tells her mum she is joining a girls football team.
